AI Made Me More Productive. Painting Made Me More Human.
What 80 people at our first vernissage taught me about the one intelligence machines can’t scale.
My wife and kids were in France. I was in China. The border between us had been closed for almost 6-month.
Like millions of people, COVID turned my world upside down. The certainty of everyday life, of being together, disappeared almost overnight.
As an entrepreneur, my instinct was to build. I immersed myself in artificial intelligence and the future of high-performing companies — a journey that became my book, Atomic Scaling, on how small teams can achieve extraordinary impact with AI.
But something unexpected happened at the same time.
I picked up a paintbrush.
At first, painting was simply a way to slow down. Technology can be draining. Art felt nourishing. No metrics, no dashboards, no deadlines — just a blank canvas waiting for the next brushstroke.
Then, as I got asked to prepare my first painting exhibition in Paris, my wife, Jiang Wang, started painting with me. Then our daughters joined — the youngest preparing the colors, the oldest the pictures for our catalogue. Painting transformed from a solitary escape into a family language. We were creating memories, stories, and emotions together, to share with the rest of the world.
Two forms of intelligence
Over the past few years, I’ve spent thousands of hours working with AI. Every new model amazed me. It helps us write faster, code faster, learn faster, build faster. It is one of the most powerful tools humanity has ever created.
Yet every evening, standing in front of a canvas while preparing for our first expo (we had nine weeks), I was reminded that some things should never be optimized.
You cannot rush emotion. You cannot automate curiosity.
You cannot prompt genuine human connection.
AI can multiply what we do. Art reminds us why we do it.
Building the Wang Bodin Studio
When we moved to France after more than two decades in China, we wanted to build something together as a family. Not another startup. A studio. A place for us to create and share.
That vision became the Wang Bodin Studio.
Our paintings explore the relationship between humanity and technology. Geometric forms meet organic emotions. Some works celebrate optimism; others ask difficult questions about societies and the future we are building.
Each canvas is a conversation — sometimes between humans and AI, sometimes between husband and wife, sometimes between parents and children.
Our first vernissage
A few days ago, we opened our first art exhibition in Paris, at 96 Avenue Kléber, just steps from the Champs-Élysées.
Honestly, we didn’t know what to expect. Would anyone come? Would people understand?
Nearly 80 people joined us — friends, entrepreneurs, artists, families. But the moment I’ll remember wasn’t the crowd.
It was a woman I had never met, standing alone in front of one painting for what must have been five full minutes. Not photographing it. Not scrolling. Just looking. When I finally approached her, she didn’t ask what the painting meant. She told me what it meant to her — a story about her own family, her three late husbands, the true love of her life, and the weight of deciding what to pass on, and to whom.
The painting had done something no algorithm has ever done to me: it made a stranger share something true. She cried. I hugged her. Then we laughed. Two strangers, instantly connected.
And all around us, the same thing was happening. The paintings — and the stories they carried — were becoming conversation starters. People who had never met were talking face to face about society, technology, education, parenthood, and the joys and challenges of life together.
That may have been the greatest artwork of the evening.
The intelligence we must not lose
I spend my professional life helping founders use AI to build faster. I believe deeply in its potential.
But after this exhibition, one thought keeps returning to me: perhaps the real challenge isn’t building more intelligent machines. It’s deepening our humanity while we do. Our judgement, our love, being true to who we are.
Technology increases productivity. Art increases empathy. Technology answers questions. Art teaches us to keep asking them.
The future doesn’t belong to AI alone. It belongs to people who know when to use it — and when to put it aside.

Block two hours this week for something with no metric attached. No dashboard, no deadline, no deliverable. Paint together. Sculpt together. Write lyrics. Make music. Cook a meal. Whatever you create, create it with someone you love.
That’s not lost productivity. That’s the part of you AI can’t replace.
Because the most important masterpiece you’ll ever create isn’t a company, a product, or even a painting.
It’s the life you build together.
You cannot prompt genuine human connection. But you can make time for it.
